The Waitetoko Plate currently resides at Tarrangower, Taumaranui, under the stewardship of Evan Erstich.

His reign spans 6 Amateur tournaments, 6 years, 13 victims, 16 scalps & 120 boxes of beer. A reign worthy of the Plate.

The Waitetoko Plate

  • The Plate is contested via a Challenge system in which the Holder will defend The Plate in Matchplay Challenge Matches. The NZRU has picked up on The Plate's success & modelled the Ranfurly Shield around it.

    1. Head to head Matchplay over 18 holes

    2. Handicaps to be agreed upon by holder & challenger*
      Any stalemate will result in an arbitrary decision via the Committee

    3. Boosters are in play

  • Holds the Waitetoko Plate

    Sits at the Champions Table for the Champions Banquet

    Receives a box of beer & a call of congratulations from each defeated foe of his reign after every successful defence.

  • After each successful defence ALL previous challengers of the current reign are compelled to ;

    • deliver a box of beer to the Holders door within 5 working days

    • call & congratulate the Holder on his esteemed reign, & ask after his wife & children

  • The holder of the Plate may return to his Seat of Power & host defences throughout the year burnishing his reign.

    Holders may;

    1. invite & host qualified challengers at any time between Amateurs*,

      1. Mandatory challengers must be given first right of refusal

    2. host as many defences against qualified challengers as they feel appropriate

    3. not host defences outside of his home course.*

      1. May change in following reigns but not during a reign

      2. Playing at the Amateurs Spiritual Home is the only exception

  • The Holder of the Plate must first accept challenges from the Prime Defence Quadrant until;

    1. the holder sweeps the Quadrant,

    2. a challenger wins the Plate & the Quadrant is closed.

    3. Waiting challengers in this quadrant will lose their opportunity to challenge

    Once a Quadrant is either closed or swept a new Quadrant is opened & follows the same rules. (A sweep or change of Holder closes the Quadrant)

    An Amateur may qualify for multiple challenges & has the right to execute on all challenges he qualifies for.

  • Managing to sweep a quadrant in Handicapped Matchplay is a meteoric feat & as such will be given the reverence it deserves.

    A holder that accomplishes the feat of dismissing every challenger in a Quadrant will be showered in praise.

    All defeated challengers will be expected to pen a letter of congratulations to the holder within the weeks following the achievement, noting the grandeur of what has taken place.

    NOTE: Players may gain access to multiple Quadrants, multiple times. As such, to sweep you may have to defeat the same challenger twice.

  • If the Holder of the Plate does not attend the Amateurs, the Plate will be relinquished & reassigned on Day 1 via the “Vacated Plate” rule.

    To win the Plate in Open competition a player must win the most holes thru 18 on day 1.

    1. Holes will be decided via Rumble method (NET>HCP>EXP)*

      1. In the event of a tie a NTP battle on the practice green at Tauhara will decide the winner. One shot per player, from a marker designated by the committee.

  • The consequences of failure in the Waitetoko Plate can be relatively minor or rather costly depending on the how the reign of the victor transpires.

    With potential for a defeated challenger not living up to his responsibilities not insignificant it is important they understand the consequences.

    For every infraction an additional year will be added to the below sanctions;

    1. Forfeit eligibility to challenge for the WP for one year

    2. Disqualification from winning any major at the Amateurs*

    3. Will default their Matchplay points in the Amateurs Shield (they will still play their matchplay to try & prevent the points going to their opponent but won’t gain any for their team. ie; if they win no-one gets points but if they lose or share their opponents will take their points as normal but they will get no points.
